Useful Tech

Before you buy another gadget, ask these five questions

A practical checklist for choosing useful tech that fits your devices, your space and the way you actually live.

A gadget can solve a real annoyance or create a new drawer of accessories. Before adding something to your setup, take a few minutes to check whether it will earn its place.

What problem will it solve?

Describe the inconvenience in a sentence. If you often run out of ports, a compatible hub may help. If you simply like the appearance of a new accessory, give yourself time before buying it.

Check whether a setting, a different cable you already own, or a change in layout solves the same problem.

Will it work with my devices?

Read the manufacturer’s compatibility information. A connector that physically fits doesn’t guarantee support for charging, video output or the transfer speed you need. Check the exact device model and relevant specifications.

For software-dependent products, look at operating system support and whether important features require an account or subscription.

Where will it live?

Measure its footprint and account for attached cables. Think about storage when it’s not in use, especially for portable accessories. Another charging device also needs a place to charge.

If you’re buying a travel accessory, consider its weight together with the cables or adapters it requires.

What ongoing work does it add?

Consider battery replacements, software updates, cleaning and extra subscriptions. A smart feature is useful only if you want to maintain it. Read the privacy settings for connected products before deciding.

What happens if it isn’t right?

Check the seller’s return terms and the manufacturer’s warranty information. Keep the packaging until you’ve confirmed that the product performs the job you bought it for.

Before the return period ends, check whether the device has made the task easier and whether its upkeep is manageable.
