Pack a lighter work-from-anywhere kit

Keep your portable workspace practical with a short packing list, compatible accessories and less just-in-case clutter.

Working away from home is easier when you know what your kit contains and why. Pack for the work you expect to do, the place you’re going and the time you’ll be away.

Start with the essentials

List the device you need, its charger and the materials for your planned tasks. Add headphones if calls or shared spaces are part of the trip. Check that the charger and cables actually work together before leaving.

Don’t assume you’ll need every accessory from your home desk. A short trip may require much less than a week of regular work.

Keep small items together

Use a pouch for loose cables and adapters, grouping them by purpose. An existing zip bag may be enough; choose a new organizer only if it makes items easier to access.

Leave room to pack quickly. A pouch that closes only when every cable is arranged perfectly will be frustrating on the return journey.

Check the destination

Confirm what your accommodation or workspace provides, including a suitable surface and connectivity. If you need an adapter, check the destination’s socket type and your device’s voltage requirements. An adapter doesn’t necessarily convert voltage.

For battery-powered accessories, check your transport provider’s current rules before traveling. Requirements can depend on the battery’s capacity and where it is packed.

Protect work and personal information

Use the security features supported by your device, install needed updates before you go, and keep it physically secure. Check your employer’s guidance if you’re handling work information away from the usual workspace.

Download essential materials in advance when permitted, so an unreliable connection doesn’t derail the task.

Unpack with the next trip in mind

After returning, note anything you used repeatedly and anything you never touched. Restock or repair what needs attention, then remove accessories that had no purpose.

Keep the items you use, arranged so you can find them, and check that the packed bag is comfortable to carry.
